WAX
~ Stain that originates from Brazil.
Advantage:
Can be walked on after few hours after application.
Consumers can maintain the floor themselves.
Disadvantage:
Durability does not compare with urethane-type stains.
Wax is slippery, so do not use on stairs.
Water turns its white so do not use in kitchen or bathroom.
Requires regular maintenance.
SHELLAC
~ Originating from India and Asia and is referred to as “universal sealer”.
Advantage:
Naturally supplied and no odor.
Easy to touch up.
Disadvantage:
Alcohol based so easily flammable.
Durability does not compare to those of urethane- type stains.
OMU
~ Polyurethane with an oil base.
Advantage:
Slow drying and easily applicable.
Low cost for adding rich depth to the wood.
Disadvantage:
Newer formulations have slowed down the drying process.
WATERBORNE
~ Close second to oil- modified polyurethane and is increasing in popularity.
Advantage:
Does not discolor or turn yellow over time.
Relatively fast drying, allowing more than one coat to be put on in a day.
Non-flammable.
Disadvantage:
Higher cost coating.
CONVERSION - VARNISH
~ It is a Swedish finish.
Advantage:
Extremely durable and chemically resistant.
Faster drying time and repairing it is easy as it the ability to wet back into itself.
Disadvantage:
Extremely flammable and strong odor.
NATURAL OIL FINISH
~ Clear or semi-transparent coating.
Advantage:
Easy to apply and natural look.
Easy to do repairs.
Disadvantage:
Among the most expensive finishes.
