Choosing Flooring for Your Home

Floors are sanded with course-medium and fine grit sand paper and finished with 3 coats of polyurethane (either oil based polyurethane or water based polyurethane).

Oil based finish has a proven track record. However, the finish ambers with time and requires a lot more drying time and emits a strong vapor that is not only unhealthy but contributes to the depletion of the earth’s ozone. While water based finish has no odor or emits any vapor, allows for quicker cure time of the floors and is healthier environment for everyone in the home.

It really depends on the size of the job and species type of floor.
For example:
From start to finish, a 1,000 sq.ft oak hardwood floor job can be done in 2 – 3 days.

Oil based polyurethane finishes can take up to 10 – 14 hours and leave behind strong odor. Water based polyurethane can take up to 3-4 hours and leaves no odor.

Yes. You can expect to see differences in your floor over the years.

The cause is usually from exposure to ultra-violet light from the rays of the sun, whether direct or indirect. This color change will be more noticeable in lighter colors, which will become darker over time. In addition, certain species like brazilian cherry, will naturally darken over the years. These changes are due to the natural characteristics of wood.

Yes, because wood is a natural product it will react to changes in its environment. The most common causes of separations are Mother Nature and dryness. The loss of moisture results in the most frequent reason for shrinkage of individual pieces and cracks. Most cracks are seasonal – they appear in dry months, or the cold season when heating is required and close during humid periods. This type of behavior is considered normal. We recommend to all customers to use humidifiers and dehumidifiers during the appropriate season as one of the ways to ensure your wood floors last as long as possible.
